Cultural and local characteristic of Shemiran and Tajrish region people

Shemiran is located in the vicinity of Tehran. This county includes Shemiran Town (the whole region 1 of Tehran Municipality and parts of regions 2 and 4) and parts of Roodbar Ghasran and Lavasanat. Shemiran consisted of two “Shemi” or “Semi” or “Shem” means “high” and “Ran” means “place” that altogether means a “high place”.

Shemiranat is the general name of a land that due to having unexampled nature and memorable landscapes and soulful green villages together with the kind and hospitable people has been always host of different ethnic groups.

Some sightseeing centers of Shemiran are as follows: Latyan Dam Lake, Dogholou Waterfall, Osoun Waterfall, Pasang Waterfall, Soutak Waterfall, Manzarieh Waterfall, Darbandsar Piste (ski run), Darbandsar, Shemshak Piste, Tochal Piste, Emamzadeh Ghasem (Shemiranat), Soltan Tomb, Khajeh Ahmad, Musa, Seyed Mirsalim Shrines and historical sites such as Imam Hassan Asgari Mosque, Dokhtar-e-Zahhak Castle, Zahhak Palace, Zoroastrians Cemetery, Kaleh Ghandi Hill, Tajeddin Tomb, Saadatabad, Hesarak Hill etc.

Deep religious beliefs of Shemiran people since past has been proverbial. As a result, this region has long-standing mosques with. Centers such as Hemmat Mosque of Tajrish, Jamaran Mosque, Jozestan Mosque, Rostamabad Mosque, Saheb-al-Amr Mosque were main bases of Shemiran people for fighting against the tyranny.

Tajrish Neighborhood: Tajrish has been assumed as one of villages of Shemiran County that today is deemed as center of Shemiran County, and located in Tehran Region 1. Although it is a very old neighborhood and one of the first neighborhoods of region geographically in the past almost included this current area, and undergone no specific change. According to the evidences, major part of Tajrish Village seems to have been located at the south of Imamzadeh Saleh and current Tajrish Square and Elahieh gardens, and consisted of two neighborhoods named Tekieh Bala and Tekieh Paein. Main center of this village may be called the current bazaar of Tajrish. This neighborhood was found about 500 to 600 years ago, prior Qajar Era. At the time of Qajar Era, Tajrish Village has been ruling place of Shemiran and/or Shemiranat (identity deed of neighborhood).

Tajrish is located in the range of Alborz Mountains and in the height of 1500 to 2000m from sea level. Height in Tajrish Square is 1612m from sea level.

The reason of formation of this neighborhood like most of neighborhoods of Shemiranat has been farming, animal breeding and gardening. The gardeners, farmers and animal breeders were people who had major role in formation of this neighborhood, and at present due to the Tajrish Bazaar, a lot of malls and shopping centers available therein, Tajrish Neighborhood has been changed to one of main shopping centers at the north of Tehran. This matter beside a desirable economic prosperity provided for this neighborhood, caused the population of this neighborhood to be multiplied in a day, and created so many complications for this neighborhood. The main square of this neighborhood in the past has been the current Tajrish Square that shopping centers and houses has been built besides it (Jabbar Hamidi).

The old name of Tajrish within thousand years ago has been Tajrasht. Some of researchers assume Tajrasht as abbreviation of Tajrdasht means a plain built in the flatland. Shemiran at the time of Nasereddin Shah Qajar was governed by Mohammadali Tajrishi for a while. He was father of Forough Alsantaneh, one of wives of Nasereddin Shah that for this reason Nasereddin had assigned ruling on Shemiran to the above-named (identity deed of neighborhood).

Tajrish Bridge at first was a small, brick and narrow bridge over Darband River that at the west side connected Maghsoudbeik River to Jafarabad and Darband, but later expanded around it and converted to the current Tajrish Square (Historical geography of Shemiran).

Existence of Emamzadeh Saleh Shrine in this neighborhood has increased the popularity and prosperity of this neighborhood. Emamzadeh Saleh is one of grandchildren of Imam Musa Kazem whose shrine is one of the most attractive and glorious religious places of Iran, and every year a lot of people enthusiastic in prophet’s family from allover of Iran and abroad came to this shrine for pilgrimage. The first and main building of Emamzadeh Saleh Shrine belongs to Ilkhani Era and built in fifth century AH. This tomb during attacks of Moguls to Ray in 617 AH was destroyed and again in 700 AH, Ghazan Khan has restored and reconstructed it. After Ilkhanian and in the Safavid and Qajar Era, some parts were added to the principal tomb, and not shrine of this Emamzadeh has been saliently expanded comparing to its primary building period (A brief history of Emamzadeh Saleh and Tajrish).

Tajrish Neighborhood is included in Zone 7 of Municipality of Tehran Dist. 1. Tajrish Neighborhood from north is limited to Shahrdari Street, from south limited to Sadr- Modares Highway, from east to Dr. Shariai Avenue and from west limited to north of Africa Avenue, Darbandi Street and Shahid Aghabozorgi Street.

Unique features:

Tajrish Neighborhood has two very obvious and important economic and religious features that Emamzadeh Saleh is deemed as a religious hub of the region and annually has the maximum number of pilgrims from throughout of Tehran, and Tajrish Bazaar also is one of the oldest and grandest bazaars of Tehran and the grandest shopping center in the region and has considerable role in the economy of neighborhood and region (Alireza Jabbar Hamidi). Besides, in Tajrish Neighborhood, not only governorship but the most governmental departments such as institutions, state organizations, universities, embassies and houses of old and new politicians are located, and increase its credit. From past by now it was a spotlight area, and due to having gardens and pleasant climate has been a suitable location for summer house of different ethnical group and now also has honest, friendly and nature-friendly people.

Tajrish Neighborhood is an economic highway that every day plenty of people from different sports come to this neighborhood for shopping.

Tajrish Bazaar: This old bazaar in terms of architecture, form and structure of building has not unique feature, but historically in particular locating in a series of shops, mosques etc., is highly interested. This bazaar starts from south side of Tajrish Bridge and goes to beginning of Ghods Square.

Bazaar Tekieh (a place for religious lamentation): One of the two well-known Tekiehs of Tajrish is Bazaar Tekieh that apparently its building has been established simultaneous to bazaar.

Emamzadeh Saleh: Every year, it is host of a lot of pilgrims from different regions that in addition to the tomb of Emamzadeh Saleh, Golzar Shohada (martyrs cemetery) located in this sacred place, increased the attraction of this place.

This religious location in addition to the religious activities over year (such as Eids and mourning ceremonies) also is dedicated to the cultural and art activities (such as holding counseling, tailoring classes etc.).
